A message from the President of CORIE:
When I left the government and decided to start my own business, the services I wanted to offer were based on areas I am passionate about and also where I felt there was the most need. They included crimes against businesses and nonprofits (white-collar crimes), which has greatly increased in recent years, crimes that target the elderly and/or anyone who is victimized in some way, and help in finding missing persons.
When thinking about white-collar crimes, for many what comes to mind is Enron or high profile cases like Bernie Madoff. But white-collar crimes can happen in any business or nonprofit and can have devastating affects no matter the size of the company.
Not long after I moved to Maine I heard from a business owner who said she had an employee who she considered "part of the family" steal large amounts of money from her business. As a result she lost the business. My thought immediately went to how easy this could have been prevented if caught early enough and preventative measures put into place.
When it comes to crimes against the elderly, I had a personal experience when my father was a victim of an elder scam. By the time I heard about it the scammers had already left the area. Because I was not in the same state I immediately contacted the local police. They interviewed my father and checked the area to see if they could find the vehicle the individuals left in but later admitted that there was not much more they could do because they “simply did not have the manpower.” I contacted the Attorney Generals’ office who also advised that they were pretty limited to steps they could take. In talking to other police departments in several jurisdictions I found they also had very limited resources to help individuals who were victimized by scammers.
My goal in developing my business was to have a place where those in need could turn to for help. There is nothing worse than having a sense that your problem is not a priority in those who are there to assist. Equally, I wanted to also work with individuals and businesses to be proactive and develop plans that will discourage or prevent problems in the future.
Throughout my career and involvement with professional organizations I had the opportunity to work with and meet many highly skilled individuals who care about the same issues as I. It is these individuals who I call upon to be part of my team and I trust to work with me to carry out CORIE’s mission.
Please never hesitate to give us a call even if you simply have a question.
Sincerely,
Karen A. Meunier
